September 11th floods us with memories and emotion as we remember that dramatic day in 2001. And we took that day to remember loved ones lost by suicide and to learn how we can save lives by raising our awareness and taking action.  Our Suicide Prevention Day brought us together with excellent presenters, stories and training.

We are all aware of the startling events in Ferguson, starting with the death of Michael Brown on August 9.  Since that time, the Ferguson community has experienced an emotional roller coaster of sadness, anger, fright, uncertainty and sustained stress.  Over the past two weeks, Provident has been in the middle of this wounded community.  We have provided community outreach and resource information to nonprofit agencies, schools and faith-based organizations.  Our 24/7 crisis hotline has been ringing off the hook, providing round-the-clock support.

This is the tip of the iceberg.

It is with a heavy heart that I send this message.  As you have seen from the news over the weekend, there was a fatal shooting, involving a young man, Michael Brown and a Ferguson Police Officer on Saturday afternoon in Ferguson. Michael, 18 years old, was shot several times by a police officer and died. The police officer has been suspended, and an investigation is ongoing.  In the aftermath of this tragedy, there has been looting and riots throughout Ferguson  and North county.

As many of you know, I was raised in North County.

Pat Harkins is a Survivor of Suicide.  Her son, Alex, died by suicide in 2009.  After much counseling and support groups, she has devoted herself to raising awareness about suicide and helping others recover.  Here she shares her story with Nichole Berlie from KSDK.  This Saturday, July 19th, Provident will be hosting our Annual Rooster Run

Technically I am a “survivor of suicide” but that title does not define me nor serve my mission.
I am a daughter who loves and misses her father.  I am a mother who wishes her son could know his grandpa. I watched mental illness destroy a person I love and I want to let people know their life is meaningful and that a brighter future is possible.
